Nose to Nose [Spirit Life Lesson]
Spirit and I laid down on our bed, side by side.
Spirit on her side and I on mine.
Our noses rested a few inches from each other.
Her eyes fluttered closed as she fell asleep.
My eyes, still open, analyzed her beautiful face and the white fur that has sprouted where once was brown fur.
I lifted my head and kissed her snout. Her eyes opened for a moment, full of understanding, as if to acknowledge my action.
I set my head back on the bed, her eyes closed now; I realized it was only me who noticed we were aging. She might know, but I’ve never seen her pay any amount of her time on the matter.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter; her recently gained white fur or my newly earned wrinkles.
Growing old isn’t a luxury everyone has! Perhaps, she knows this, and perhaps, this is what has set her free to truly live. She doesn’t live based on age, but based on life – our life.
And, in the end, when the coffin closes, that is really what is going to matter.
